Ephemeral Towards Physical
Poster Exhibition

The human eye compensates for variations in wavelength composition, permitting uniform perception of coloured objects under different forms of light; however, we can also understand subtle colour differences in light when reflected through transparent, curved, or oily surfaces. Since sight is closely linked to understandings of tangible matter - and we experience light primarily through vision - it is terminally difficult to appreciate light as a physical entity even though it undoubtedly is.
Exposing the imperceptible qualities of light presents a fascinating problem. The physicality of light is felt, even though it is not always visible. Light exists as a multi-sensory phenomenon, with highly elastic effects on our perceptions of architectural and aural spaces alike. When we move beyond the eye - from micro to macro visualization - we can actually see much more, and realize light as a physical entity. Stereopsis, the method by which our eyes interpret and record depth and thus solidity, prevents us from deciphering light as three-dimensional. The technology apparatus has the ability to look at light without the human eye’s proclivity towards perspectival and occlusive interference.
Collaborative and contextual functions between light and the media that can be used to represent it allows for a dynamic exploration of its complexity. The artists featured in this exhibit present multiple ways of interpreting, capturing, recording, and using the experiential and physical nature of light. Using various technologies to transform the invisible into visible, the intangible into material, and the inconceivable into reality, these representations provoke and shatter our previous conceptions of what light can be.
