NanoGraffiti: Mark-Making on the Molecular Landscape
By Stephanie Andrews
School of the Art Institute of Chicago
http://www.stephnet.org
This presentation will specifically examine the artistic possibilities of using technology that involves nanoscale mark-making. The implementation of NanoGraffiti will be presented in a brief overview of essential concepts, and specific technologies introduced. In addition, the presentation will cover conceptual groundwork people have done in physics, biotechnology, and micro technology.
We'll examine who has been doing the tagging thus far, and what relationships these practitioners have, if any, to the art world. The definition of visual art is stretched by the creation of something so small it cannot be perceived properly with light-based technologies. We will consider the critiquing of political and social implications as a starting point for creating artistic works. Finally, we'll look at strategies for artists to gain access to nanotechnology.
Biography:
Stephanie Andrews is a multimedia and installation artist who uses techniques of illusion and transformation to bring people into her work as active agents of perception. Her work uses technologies such as digital imaging, video, 3D graphics, neon, and computer-controlled kinetic systems. She exhibits in diverse settings: galleries, museums, feature films, television, and art festivals. She is an Instructor of 3D Animation and Rendering at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where she also earned her MFA. In addition, she works with the University of Chicago, creating animations to illustrate cosmology. Designed for interactive virtual reality environments, plasma screens, and the web, this work is being installed at the Adler Planetarium and SciTech Museum. Previously, Andrews was a Technical Director for Pixar Animation Studios on the films A Bug's Life and Toy Story 2. She frequently collaborates with members of other creative disciplines in the realization of large-scale artistic works.
