Qulliq
Arnait Ikkajurtigiit,
Canada, 1992, video, 12:00
The women of Arnait Ikkajurtigiit of Igloolik explore two
appropriate technologies: the new technology of video documents
the traditional technology of the qulliq or seal-oil lamp.
As elegant as a science experiment, Qulliq also functions
as an instructional video as it communicates technological
knowledge between generations.
Arnait Ikkajurtigiit, now called Arnait Video Productions,
has been producing video since 1991. It is a collective of
Inuit women from Igloolik who express their values and views
through a medium that allow them to share their stories with
their community and with a larger audience. Qulliq was made
by Susan Avingaq, Madeline Ivalu, Mathilda Hanniliaq, Martha
Maktar, and Marie-Hélène Cousineau. http://www.isuma.ca/about_us/arnait/
