The Appearance Machine

The Appearance Machine physically transforms detritus into a live audio/video stream which is unicast directly to the festival or gallery viewer from its permanent location in New York City. An industrial entertainment complex for the continual transformation of the input of locally generated refuse to output as global media, it is an autonomous synaesthetic system that perpetually constructs a cinematic aural/visual space. Computers act as translators. The machine's images, created in realtime, are analyzed for movement and perform the accompanying soundtrack. Willy Le Maitre and Eric Rosenzveig

Willy Le Maitre is trained as a visual artist, Eric Rosenzveig as an improvising musician and programmer. We have worked together since 1992. In our collaboration, we have sought to create time based works that are neither distinctly sound nor image but function limininally between the two mediums creating a hybrid third.
